According to the sheriff’s office, a white woman, Susan Lorincz, faces accusations of shooting and killing Ajike “AJ” Owens, a Black individual, through a closed door in Ocala.
Following a racially charged incident, the arrest occurred after protests demanding the apprehension of the shooter, as mentioned in Nypost.
Initially, sheriff officials were reluctant to charge Lorincz as detectives diligently investigated whether her actions aligned with the principles of self-defense outlined in the Sunshine State’s stand-your-ground laws.
The incident occurred around 9 pm following a dispute between Lorincz and Owens. As the sheriff’s office reported, the conflict arose when Lorincz became upset over Owens’ children playing in a nearby field.
After Lorincz threw a roller skate at Owens’ 10-year-old son and swung an umbrella at him and another sibling, Owens repeatedly knocked on Lorincz’s door.
The sheriff’s office states that Lorincz shot Owens through the door, resulting in a fatal gunshot wound to the upper chest.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office mentioned that Lorincz claimed self-defense, asserting that Owens had attempted to enter her residence before her forcefully discharging her firearm.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods explained that investigators needed to examine whether Florida’s “stand your ground thoroughly” law was applicable before proceeding with an arrest.
The shooting details were initially limited to the local area until civil rights attorney Ben Crump brought it to the public on Monday.
Further, Crump revealed that he had been hired by Owens’ family and stated that Owens had confronted a white woman, allegedly using racial slurs towards her children and demanding they leave her property.
According to Crump, the white woman, Susan, forcibly took an iPad the children were using, leading Owens to request its return. Tragically, the situation escalated and resulted in a fatal outcome.
