Tyler Perry parents: Willie Maxine Perry, Emmitt Perry Sr.

Emmitt Perry Jr., also referred to as Tyler Perry, was born on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans to Emmitt Perry Sr. and Willie Maxine Perry.

Perry didn’t experience a happy childhood. It was harsh and difficult, though, because his own father had physically abused him. Because of this, Perry often had suicidal thoughts and even actually tried to commit suicide. Perry and his mother attended church every Sunday, which was the only place where he could find comfort.

When he became 16 years old, he changed his name to Tyler to further set himself apart from his father. The boy did get a GED despite not finishing high school.
