Laura Zonetta Baugh is an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour for 25 years. She is also a published author and golf broadcaster.
Baugh was born in Gainesville, Florida. Her father, Hale Baugh, a lawyer who competed in the modern pentathlon at the 1948 Summer Olympics, was an avid amateur golfer who introduced his children to the game at a young age. Baugh won the PeeWee National Championship five times, the first time when she was only 3 years old.

Her parents divorced when she was 11, and she and her mother moved from Florida to Long Beach, California. Short on money for greens fees, Baugh and her friends would sneak onto golf courses to play. At the age of 14, she won her first of two consecutive Los Angeles City Women’s Golf Championships. Her older brother, Beau Baugh, also played professionally for a time. Baugh graduated high school at age 16 with honors and went on to attend Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach.

In 1971, at the age of 16, Baugh made history by becoming the youngest champion of the U.S. Women’s Amateur. “Eric Cole’s mother” defeated Beth Barry 1 up in the 36-hole final match held at the Atlanta Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Baugh’s win brought her considerable publicity, and she was named a Los Angeles Times “Woman of the Year” in 1971. The following year, she was named “Most Beautiful Golfer” by Golf Digest, and she even appeared in a television commercial for UltraBrite toothpaste that won a Clio Award.
Baugh was a member of the U.S. teams that won the 1972 Curtis Cup and the 1972 Espirito Santo Trophy, where she finished tied for third in the individual competition. Despite receiving a full academic scholarship offer from Stanford University, she declined it because the school did not have a women’s golf team.
Baugh turned professional in 1973 and signed with the International Management Group. Eric Cole’s mother quickly gained endorsements from major companies such as Ford, Rolex, Suzuki, The Ladies Home Journal, Wilson, Bermuda’s Tourist Bureau, and Colgate Palmolive. She played on the LPGA of Japan Tour before becoming eligible to join the LPGA Tour. In her debut year on the LPGA Tour, she earned the Rookie of the Year honors, finishing second in her first tour debut. Throughout her professional career, Baugh earned 71 top-10 finishes, including ten runners-up, and won a significant amount of prize money. “Eric Cole mom” also worked as a television announcer for The Golf Channel.
After her LPGA Tour career, Baugh played on the Legends Tour, previously known as the Women’s Senior Golf Tour, and helped make the U.S. Senior Women’s Open a reality. She played in the inaugural event in 2018 at the Chicago Golf Club.

Despite her immense talent and successful start in the sport, Baugh struggled with alcoholism and emotional problems which prevented her from winning any LPGA tournaments.
Her drinking led to spontaneous bleeding, which could have been fatal had she not received treatment, including time at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1996. Baugh wrote about her struggles with alcohol in a 1999 book called “Out of the Rough”. In 2013, after living in Orlando, Florida for 25 years, Baugh relocated to Augusta, Georgia, and later to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where she currently works as a golf instructor at Sawgrass Country Club.
